Anglicanism in London

Monday, January 31st, 2011

I am just back from a couple of weeks as locum tenens of two parishes in the City of London. Two of my most vivid impressions of how the church is different there:

1. A strong Evangelical faction is challenging to more liberal Anglo-Catholic congregations. The Evangelicals seem to attract many more people, even though they are very conservative.

2. At the same time, significant minorities within most City of London congregations are uncomfortable with proposed consecration of women bishops–and even with present female priests.

While Evangelical/Anglo-Catholic conflict and opposition of the ordination of women could be found in the Episcopal Church, these conflicts mercifully are much less common here. —J. Douglas Ousley
