E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF JUNE 8-JUNE 15, 2008

This Saturday, June 14, Ms. Ann Tillman will be ordained to the transitional diaconate in her home parish in Elmira, New York.  Ann was our seminarian from General Theological Seminary last year.

The transitional diaconate differs, as the adjective would suggest, from the permanent or vocational diaconate in terms of permanence.  Ann will later be ordained a priest.  The Rev. Deacon Bob Zito, our parish deacon, is a vocational deacon and will remain a deacon.

"Diokonos" is Greek for service, and deacons serve the church and the world.  During the liturgy, the deacon — if present — proclaims the Gospel, reads the prayers of the people, sets the altar and washes the vessels after the Eucharist, and dismisses the congregation.  In each action, the deacon embodies service within the church.  Outside of the church, deacons care for the sick, the shut-in, and often the poor and those in need.

O God, most merciful Father, we praise you for sending your Son Jesus Christ, who took on himself the form of a servant, and humbled himself, becoming obedient even to death on the cross. We praise you that you have highly exalted him, and made him Lord of all; and that, through him, we know that whoever would be great must be servant of all. We praise you for the many ministries in your Church, and for calling this your servant to the order of deacons.

(from the Prayer of Consecration for a Deacon, Book of Common Prayer, p. 545)
