E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 7-14, 2008

On September 10, the church remembers Alexander Crummell (1819-1898), priest, missionary and educator.  Mr. Crummell was a missionary in Liberia for over twenty years.  He returned to the States and served in urban African-American communities.  Alexander Crummell established Saint Luke's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. and the American Negro Academy.

Almighty and everlasting God, we thank you for your servant Alexander Crummell, whom you called to preach the Gospel to those who were far off and to those who were near. Raise up in this and every land evangelists and heralds of your kingdom, that your Church may proclaim the unsearchable riches of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

COMING UP AT INCARNATION

*Sunday, September 14           10:00 am.  Adult Forum resumes in Parish House Dining Room and is open to teens and young adults--anyone who is interested in exploring the Scriptures and tenets of our faith.  In the Fall, we are looking at the lessons assigned to each Sunday.  There is no outside reading and no expectation that a person will come to every session: come when you can, as often as you can!  Coffee and tea are provided.

11:00 am.  Sunday School begins its Fall term.  Children, ages 4 to 10, should come to church with their parents and will be invited to exit midway through the service for an age-appropriate lesson and craft.  The theme for this year's Sunday School is God's Family Tree.  The program will begin with stories about the early people of God — Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Moses and other prophets, up to the birth of Jesus.  Registration forms can be found at the back of the church and online.  The lessons are not denomination-specific; tell your friends and neighbors with children about our program.

Sunday, September 21            11:00 am.  The choir returns.  Installation of the acolytes.

Friday, September 26-             Parish Retreat at Incarnation Center, Ivoryton, CT.

Sunday, September 28            A weekend to get away, relax, and enjoy the company of your fellow parishioners.  There will be a daily spiritual component and a Sunday Eucharist service in the chapel.  Speak to Amanda, the Assistant Minister, or Susan Ridgeway for more information.  To reserve a space, please call the Parish Office, 212 689-6350, and mail or drop off a $50 non-refundable deposit (checks can be made out to the "Church of the Incarnation," memo "2008 Parish Retreat").

Sunday, October 5                  Homecoming Sunday.  Potluck Luncheon after the 11:00 am service.  The most recent newsletter contains a reply card where you can indicate the number of people in your party as well as what type of dish you will provide.  Please respond by October 2.

4:00 pm.  Blessing of the Animals in front of the church in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Monday, October 6                 7:00 pm.  Men's Group meets in Parish House.  Danny Curtin, an artist specializing in media arts who is a member of Incarnation, will give a survey of contemporary work in his field.  Men who wish to be on the mailing list for this and other Men's Groups events, should contact the Rector, ousleyjd@churchoftheincarnation.org.

Tuesday, October 7                 7:00 pm. Women's Group meets.

CARPENTER'S KIDS is a partnership between parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of New York and parishes in the Anglican Diocese of Central Tanganyika (Tanzania) that provides for the primary education needs of Tanzanian children orphaned by HIV/AIDS or malaria or otherwise vulnerable.  This is the second year Incarnation is participating in the program and supporting kids in the parish of Mpalanga.  Fifty dollars ($50) provides a uniform, school supplies and a daily meal for one child for one year.  We welcome your contributions.  All proceeds directly benefit the program in Tanzania.  Checks can be made out to the "Church of the Incarnation," with "Carpenter's Kids" on the memo line, and mailed to:

209 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10016.

Be well.
