E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 22 - MARCH 1, 2009

Sandy Webb, on right, pictured here with the Bishop of Toungoo, the Right Rev'd John Wilme.

Incarnation's seminarian, Sandy Webb, participated in a cultural immersion program in Burma during January of this year.  An article about the trip can be found here.  Below, Sandy shares some of his initial reflections:

“We spent a month visiting the Anglican Church in Myanmar (Burma). In many ways, it was like stepping into the pages of a National Geographic magazine: we watched people use elephants to move heavy logs, visited parishioners in thatch-roofed huts, and came to regard as normal the idea that livestock walk freely in the street. (You don't see many cows walking up Park Avenue!) Yet, this was just the scenery. What we experienced was extreme poverty, the systematic oppression of entire ethnic groups, and a total lack of free speech. This is the context in which the sixty thousand Anglican Christians carry out their mission, providing education, clean water, medical care, and basic skills training for poor people around the country. The Episcopal Church (USA) has a lot to do with that ministry, supporting the Church in Myanmar through the national budget, Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD), and the United Thank Offering (UTO).”

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole
body of thy faithful people is governed and sanctified:
Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before
you for all members of your holy Church, that in their
vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you;
through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Amen.
