E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF APRIL 12-19, 2009

EASTER AT INCARNATION

THE LIGHT OF CHRIST

During Lent we contemplate our sins and the sins of the world.  Lent liturgies are stark and solemn.  In Holy Week, as we remember Christ's last days—his death, but also his betrayal and abandonment by those who loved him, our worship is increasingly heavy and dark.  Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday end with the church in darkness.  Good Friday concludes with an empty, bare church and the doors being shut and locked.  On Holy Saturday we gather in the dimly-lit narthex, outside a still-darkened church, and are handed unlit candles.  We wait.

Quietly and discreetly, the Easter Vigil began with the kindling of a New Fire.  From this flame, the Paschal Candle was lit, and from the Paschal Candle our individual candles were lit.  The deacon carried the candle into the nave; we followed behind, still sharing the New Fire with one another, incrementally dispelling the darkness and chanting,

"The light of Christ.  Thanks be to God."

Thanks be to God for the light, the light of Christ which illuminates the darkness, casts away every shadow, and comes to dwell not only within the walls of the church, but in our hearts.

Alleluia.  Christ is Risen.
