E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF APRIL 19-26, 2009

This Saturday, April 25, the church celebrates the Feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist.  The title evangelist refers to his writing the Gospel that bears his name.  The Gospel of Mark is believed to be the earliest Gospel account of the four in our Bible (Matthew, Luke, and John being the other, later accounts).  The Episcopal Church cycles through a three-year rotation of scripture readings for Sunday called a lectionary.  We are currently in Lectionary Year B and Mark's Gospel is the primary Gospel for this year.

Mark's symbol is a lion, often depicted with wings; why a winged lion?  See the final paragraph at this link: http://satucket.com/lectionary/Mark.htm.

Almighty God, who by the hand of Mark the evangelist have given to your Church the Gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God: We thank you for this witness, and pray that we may be firmly grounded in its truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
