E-MINDER: the Church of the Incarnation

THE WEEK OF MAY 24-MAY 31, 2009

Last Thursday was the Feast of the Ascension, depicted in the icon above.  On this day, the church recalls Christ's ascending to heaven forty days after Easter.  Ten days later, a total of fifty days after Easter, the church celebrates Pentecost (Greek for "fiftieth day") and the gift of the Holy Sprit.  The Spirit descends in tongues of flame.

The language of ascent and descent, and the associated imagery — particularly of Christ's ascension — can trouble modern minds.  It is helpful to remember the assumed nature of the universe in Biblical times (heaven above and the earth below), and to focus on the more abstract, theological, truths these movements represent.  After his earthly ministry, Christ returned to the Father; and the Spirit was sent forth from the Father and the Son.  These statements reveal the rich inner life and relationship among the three persons of the Triune God.  The following collect for Ascension Day, then, asks that we might also come to share in the life and love of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Grant, we pray, Almighty God, that as we believe your only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into heaven, so we may also in heart and mind there ascend, and with him continually dwell; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
